First off, thank you for giving me the opportunity to vent.

All weekend my ears (especially my right one) have been bugging me. Achy and feeling like someone was covering them....today at school...I couldn't hear. The pain is gone but my left ear was maybe at 80% capacity...my right one? maybe MAYBE 10-15% :(

I sign. Meaning I can converse in ASL (American Sign Language). This is great because me and my friend P. can communicate at school with no problems and without him having to write everything out or having an interpreter there (and I don't have to use my voice which is nice sometimes, too...sometimes I just don't want to talk/listen to people) but today....today I RELIED on signing because my ears were no good. I was ok in 1-on-1 conversations with my hearing friends...but as soon as I was part of a group I had a super hard time trying to keep up with what was going on, to the point where I just ended up being frustrated and didn't even try anymore. It was kind of interesting to realize how well two ears work together and how surround sound is a gift.

By the way, I have decided that the cafeteria is a HORRIBLE place...I have noticed before that I have trouble understanding everything that is being said when the background noise gets loud (like at iHop the other day) but today was just...not cool....

I ended up retreating to the library where it was quiet and no one talked so I liked that...that's where my friend P. found me a little after and asked me what's wrong...of course, I was preaching to the choir complaining to him (in ASL) about hearing people and how they talk too fast and don't look at me while talking etc....P has hearing aids but they don't help him too much.
He just smiled and said "Welcome to the Deaf world." and "I feel so connected to you today" his humor is awesome and he cheered me up. I tried to tell him how much I respect all he goes through in a school-environment with so many people talking and talking and not slowing down...but he said, it's different for him, because he's used to it, and my brain is wired to receive input from my eyes and ears...his brain completely focuses on gathering info from what his eyes see.

my insulin pump, phone etc have been on vibrate for a while now...I just can't hear things beeping anymore...I haven't heard the oven preheated signal for a months...

Once my ears clear up, I'll still have to go and have my hearing checked (like I had planned to do last week) because I have noticed that I just don't do well in environments with a lot of background noise in general and to me 70% of people mumble. I'm kinda scared...I don't want to have to rely on yet another battery operated gadget. My insulin pump is enough....but I do feel very blessed because even if I should lose my hearing one day...I know ASL, so I know it wouldn't be the end of the world. But it's still scary...a good of amount of diabetics experience hearing loss and I can't help but think of a connection there...I'll see....

The Culver City City Park is laid out in three levels; the first level is mainly shrubbery and trees (and a small parking lot), with a wooden ramp leading up the hill to the second level, which holds a parking lot and the main baseball field (as well as a sundial big enough to choke a horse). (I...uh...don't know what that means.) Another set of stairs leads from the second level to the third level, which holds another parking lot, and the other main baseball field. The third level is the most defensible position, having only three paths leading to it. But we'll make our stand on the second level; and I'll tell you why: it's all the climbing; my knees can't take it. I'm not as spry as I once was. The second level is well defended, what with the enormous sundial (it's not very useful, but it sure does make a statement), and the drinking fountains. We'll show those mµ!h%^rfµ?#@s what we mean when we say please don't invade us with your extraterrestrial army of mutant aliens with lasers and things; we just had the place redone. And, if we're lucky, the leader of the aliens will say "Yes, we will not destroy your fine park, out of respect for your gigantic and kitschy sundial. Direct us please to your finest Ramada Inn." And then we will all have a very nice picnic on the lower level, with barbecued meats and green salad. Then, inevitably, someone will pull out a cookbook called "To Serve Man: Lo-Carb Edition" and that's when the trouble will start.
